A woman was burned to death in a freak accident Wednesday when her pickup became stuck in some thick mud and a fire ignited while she accelerated and spun her tires to free the vehicle, according to a Local 6 News report.
Deputies said for some reason Karen Herndon of West Melbourne drove off Interstate 95 and into some nearby woods. Herndon's Toyota pickup became stuck and then was buried in the sand and mud.
Investigators said exhaust and the tires apparently caught fire as the woman tried to get the vehicle out of the mud.
Herndon tried to escape the flames and managed to crawl into a clump of brush but died of her burns. Police said she was burned over 80 percent of her body.
Children playing nearby the incident called 911 after hearing what they though were explosions. But police said the children heard the sounds of the vehicle's tires exploding in the fire.
Homicide investigators were initially called out to the scene but investigators now believe it was just a freak accident.
"We are just at a lost over why she was in that wooded area at this point," an officer told Local 6 News.
