A driver in Orange County, Fla., shot and killed himself, and another driver was shot and injured in Volusia County, Fla., after unrelated gun battles that occurred during routine traffic stops in Central Florida.
In the first incident, an Orange County sheriff's deputy made a routine traffic stop Thursday night at about 10 p.m. at Lake Pickett and Chuluota Road.
When the officer approached the vehicle, a man pulled a gun and fired at the deputy, police told Local 6 News. The bullet missed and the deputy opened fire, the report said.
The driver fled in his vehicle but was later found dead in the car.
At first, it was believed that the man was shot dead by the deputy, but officials said Friday that the fatal shot was self-inflicted.
Meanwhile, another driver was hospitalized after he injured a police officer during a routine traffic stop, according to police.
Officers in Daytona Beach Shores attempted to pull over a driver, but the man refused to stop and a chase ensued.
Police then opened fire at Arlington Avenue and Ridgewood Avenue because the suspect used his car as a weapon and struck an officer's leg and broke it, Local 6's Charnel Wright said.
Other police cruisers stopped the vehicle by ramming into it near Kingston Road.
"In order to stop the subject and protect the citizens and officers of this community and surrounding communities and the people who are out on the street, the officers fired in an effort to stop the subject," Daytona Beach police Officer Greg Grayson said. "The subject continued trying to intentionally strike several officers."
The driver was shot and sent to a hospital with minor gunshot wounds.
A woman inside the vehicle was also injured.
A motive for the shooting was not known.
The shooting is under investigation.
