Cams Would Ticket Red-Light Runners

Study: Orange County Drivers Run 11,000 Lights Daily

A plan to install cameras to catch and automatically ticket some of the 11,000 motorists who run red lights every day in Orange County, Fla., could bring revenue that would rival lottery winnings, according to a Local 6 News report.
SURVEY: What Do You Think?

A traffic study in December tracked five intersections in Orange County and found at one intersection 2,700 drivers ignored a red light and continued driving when they should have stopped.

"Some county lawmakers want a green light from state lawmakers to approve putting cameras at intersections and using them, not just to mail letters to drivers about what they already know they did but to punish them for it with fines," Local 6's Jamie Guirola said.

"We have to," Orange County Commissioner Linda Stewart said. "It is a safety issue and a matter of life and death for many of our residents. So, we need to do this."

Currently, state statutes let police use red-light cameras to warn violators but not ticket them.

The city of Orlando has about 10 red-light cameras in place but if drivers are filmed breaking the law they are not fined.

The county's plan is more severe and if it goes through, it would be the first in the state and would bring millions of dollars a day, Local 6 News reported.

Critics of the cameras have cited privacy concerns.
