DELTONA, Fla. -- A Central Florida firefighter was arrested Wednesday on charges of possessing child pornography and showing obscene material to a minor.
Lt. Michael Drennen, 34, who works at Station 33 in DeBary with Volusia County Fire Services, faces 11 felony charges, including 10 counts of possession of sexual performance by a child and one count of showing obscene material to a minor. The charges are third-degree felonies.
An investigation was sparked after a complaint was filed with the Volusia County Sheriff's Office on Feb. 9, alleging that Drennen was showing pornography to a 6-year-old boy in his Deltona home, which is located across the street from a school. Authorites said that it was not a random act and that Drennen and the boy know each other.
Investigators seized two computers, a digital camera and numerous computer disks from Drennen's house, discovering 17 video clips depicting sex acts involving children, according to a report from the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. Deputies said they believe Drennen downloaded the video clips from the Internet.
Drennen was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach, where he's being held on $55,000 bond.
Drennen has been suspended without pay.
He started with the county as a volunteer firefighter in July 1994 and became a full-time, paid firefighter in February 1998.
