MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. -- An 11-foot-long alligator was captured and killed Thursday afternoon after crawling out of a river near a school bus stop in Merritt Island, according to officials.
Authorities said the alligator left the river about 2 p.m. and went across a road near South Tropical Trail and Alameda Drive before ending up in a retention basin.
Officials said the animal had to be killed because it was near a bus stop and neighborhood.
Due to mating season, authorities said the incident was not unusual.
