A grandfather fought off a man who attempted to abduct his 8-year-old granddaughter as she walked through a truck stop parking lot in Ocala, Fla., according to police.

Investigators in Marion County, Fla., said the young girl was walking through the Pilot Travel Center truck stop off Interstate 75 in Ocala Thursday when a man jumped out of his vehicle and grabbed her.

The girl's grandfather noticed the attack, ran to the man and pulled the girl away, the police said.

The man, who police have identified as Michael David Gherardi, jumped back into his vehicle after a fight with the girl's grandfather and sped away with a woman police identified as Janet Stein.

The vehicle is described as a blue, 4-door 1993 Mercury Grand Marquis with a tag of G54SLI.

Anyone who comes in contact with them, the vehicle or knows the whereabouts of Gherardi or Stein is requested to contact the Marion County Sheriff's Office at 352-732-9111.
