Millions suffer from migraine headaches every day and the pain can be crippling.
But what if migraine sufferers could get a treatment for headaches before they start?
Migraines cost the nation millions of dollars in lost work days, not to mention
the countless visits to doctors and hospitals each year.
While there are many medications available to stop a migraine, doctors in Chicago are looking into a way to prevent migraines.
Those who suffer migraines say it is like the worse hangover you've ever had and then multipled by 10.
Dr. Seymour Diamond, a headache specialist, said that migraines happen on one side of the head caused by changes in nerves and blood vessels in the brain.
"When somebody gets a headache, there may be a spasm of the muscles and nerves. All sorts of things can trigger a migraine ... foods like meats, chocolate, and cheese, hormones, a change in weather, and stress.
Some headache sufferers are trying Botox.
In large doses, the poison can kill. But in small doses, Botox is often used for cosmetic procedures to wipe away
wrinkles.
Now it's also showing promise in treating migraine headaches.
Several injections are given in various places around the head.
The six-month study is being conducted at the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago.
While most medications work to stop a migraine while it's happening, Botox is being
tested as a way to prevent migraines.
The effects can last from two months to six months.
Half the people in the study will get Botox, and the other half will get a placebo.
