'Dead Cripple In Wheelchair' Sign Sparks Outrage In Central Fla.

POSTED: Wednesday, April 18, 2007
UPDATED: 12:25 am EDT April 20, 2007

A controversial business sign featuring a joke about a cripple person in a wheelchair has sparked outrage in an Ocala, Fla., community and prompted a protest Wednesday for its removal.

The sign in front of Hercules Fence Company reads, "What has four wheels and flies? A dead cripple in a wheelchair."

Carol Terrillion, who had polio as a child and uses a motorized wheelchair, was one in the group of protesters demanding that the sign be removed from public view.

"I fought all my life for things like this -- just to be equal and to get a ground in life and be somebody and something," Terrillion said. "And then I see this. It is amazing that they can get away with putting this up there."

Employees at the business Wednesday said they do not have a say in changing the sign.

Groups are calling on national companies that supply the business to put pressure on the business to remove the sign.

A manager said the store's owner, Paul Buchkovich, decided which jokes to post.
