Radio Station's Free Breast Implant Contest Sparks Controversy

POSTED: Wednesday, April 18, 2007
UPDATED: 10:07 am EDT April 19, 2007

A Central Florida radio station's contest offering a free breast implant to the woman who "parties the hardest" is drawing controversy over the surgeon who will be performing the operation, according to a Local 6 report.

Real Radio 104.1 is offering the breast augmentation to the woman who parties during a so-called slumber party.

The man chosen to perform the surgery, Dr. Barry Kaplan, was investigated by the Problem Solvers last year after he was put on probation and fined after some of his patients said he botched their surgeries.

When Problem Solver Tony Pipitone tried to ask Kaplan about the allegations in an earlier story, he did not comment.

"We are just wondering what it says to people about the amount of fines you've had and the reprimand and your standard of care?" Pipitone asked.

"I have no comment at this time," Kaplan said.

Local 6 also asked why Kaplan allegedly screwed a breast sling into the collarbone into a patient in 1999 -- an experimental procedure he was later barred from performing after the patient claimed disfigurement and the sensation the patients compared to "a rubber band going through my breasts."

The complaints stem from three patient complaints and a fourth has been submitted to the Department of Health for investigation, the report said.

Thursday morning, Local 6's Tiffany Tift asked on-air personality Russ Rollins about the contest.

"I don't know what they know or what they don't know," Rollins said. "I know that each one of them wants a breast augmentation and they probably can't afford it and they are willing to be a part of a slumber party to try to win that. Anybody can go down to Dr. Barry Kaplan and have a consultation with him."

Rollins said he knew of the doctor's controversial past before the contest Thursday.

"We got a contest going on in two days that I thought would get more attention," Rollins said. "We are doing 'Fatties at the Fair' where we send big women to the Central Florida Fair where they ride rides and eat food all day. I thought that would get more attention than this. Obviously, when you are in radio, you do whatever you can to get attention but you don't want anybody to actually get hurt or anything to happen. Nothing bad is going to happen to our listeners. We love the Monster fans."

Kaplan is on probation until July, the report said.
