A surfer was bitten on the hand by a shark at New Smyrna Beach Friday afternoon, according to officials.

The 24-year-old victim was bitten on his left hand while paddling on his surfboard, a Volusia County Beach Patrol official told Local 6 News.

The incident happened near the 3600 block of South Ocean Beach Boulevard, about 300 yards south of 27th Avenue, officials said.

The bite victim was able to make it back to shore, where he was assisted by a lifeguard.

The man was transported to Halifax Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
