13-year-old boy shot in drive-by in Orlando

Shooting comes less than 24 hours after girl struck in separate incident

ORLANDO, Fla. – For the second time in less than 24 hours, a child was shot and wounded in a drive-by shooting in Orlando.

The shooting happened Tuesday night at a home in the 7700 block of Newlan Drive.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said several shots were fired into the home as a car drove past around 9:30 p.m. A 13-year-old boy was struck in the leg, deputies said. Authorities initially said the boy was 12 years old.

According to the report, the boy yelled "I'm shot, I'm shot" to his brother and was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The boy was in the house with his mother, stepfather, brother and another teen who was visiting, but no one else was injured, deputies said.

News 6 reporter Mark Lehman said at least 10 bullet holes could be seen in the home.

The boy's stepfather said he first thought firecrackers were exploding before realizing that shots had been fired. He said a bullet went through the front door and struck his son, who was in the kitchen.

The man said he had no idea why someone would open fire on his house, but he said there have been a lot of shootings in his neighborhood.

A neighbor said he saw a dark-colored vehicle driving slowly with a gunman hanging out of a window before shots were fired.

According to the incident report, a witness and friend of the brother said she saw a black Charger or Mustang with two white lines on the roof drive slowly past them minutes before the shooting.

No suspect information was available, deputies said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.

A9-year-old girl was shot in the leg early Tuesday while sleeping on a couch at a family friend's house. She's expected to make a full recovery. No arrests have been made in the shooting.

The drive-by shootings do not appear to be related, officials said.
