13-year-old killed by SunRail train 'just loved life'

Vigil held for Marcees Kilpatrick in Sanford

SANFORD, Fla. – A vigil was held Tuesday night in Sanford for the 13-year-old hit and killed by a SunRail train.

Tears ran down loved ones' faces as they prayed together for Marcees Kilpatrick.

"Marcees was humble, energetic, adventurous, mannerable, (he) just played football (and) he just loved life" said Starr Lawrence, a friend of the family.

Added football coach Michael Oshaughnessy, "He just would always get in and do what you needed him to do. His teammates loved him."

Marcees was killed by a SunRail train Friday afternoon while crossing the tracks with his bicycle, police said.

The sound of trains passing by during the vigil was a heartbreaking reminder of what happened to Marcees.

"Here it comes,” Lawrence said of the train. “I kinda get emotional when I hear it.”

Marcees’ guardian was comforted by family, telling News 6 the past 96 hours without Marcees have been difficult.

"I don't sleep at night,” Dunice Beasley said. “I wake up thinking he's in the room but he's not in the room, he's not there. It hurts me so bad.”

After a song, everyone lit candles and sprinkled flowerseed in Marcees’ memory.
