A representative from the
Orlando Catholic Diocese met Wednesday with the proprietor of a business where a Virgin Mary statue apparently cried a tear and said "the phenomenon is an occasion of some spiritual introspection."
PHOTOS: Photos Of Orlando Statue Castle Designs in Orlando received the marble statue weeks ago from overseas, according to the report.
The statue is a reproduction of the
Pieta -- one of Michelangelo's greatest works of art depicting the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Christ.
The black tear was just recently noticed at the store and owners said it appears to be coming from inside the statue.
"We started noticing that there was a small gray line every day that kept getting darker and darker," Castle Designs CEO Les Roberts said.
Wednesday, a diocesan representative met with Roberts to view and discuss the statue.
After conferring with Roberts, it is the position of the Diocese that the black vein coming from Mary’s eye is a natural occurrence, a statement from the Orlando Diocese said.
Even though the "weeping" can be explained in purely natural terms, the phenomenon is an occasion of some spiritual introspection, the statement said.
The Diocesan representative also spoke with Roberts about the eventual permanent placement of the statue and the possibility of the Diocese partaking in that conversation.
The Diocese is open to receiving the statue as a donation from Castle Designs, the statement said.
