Voters apparently had fond enough memories of "Memento" to vote it the winner of four Independent Spirit Awards Saturday, including best feature.
A crime drama told in reverse, "Memento" follows a man (Guy Pearce) with short-term memory loss trying to solve a murder. The film also earned a best supporting female award for Carrie-Anne Moss, and best director and best screenplay awards for Christopher Nolan.
Nolan, also an Oscar nominee for best original screenplay, thanked his cast and crewmembers, naturally, but didn't forget about to the audiences who went to see his film.
"I think our film perhaps more than any other benefited from people's willingness to see something a little different from what everybody else was offering," said Nolan in his speech for best director. "I think that everybody would do well to have a lot of faith in audiences, because certainly in our case, they came to see our film. I'm very grateful to them."
Also an Oscar nominee, "In the Bedroom" won three Independent Spirit Awards, including best first feature (for filmmaker Todd Field), best male lead for Tom Wilkinson, and best female lead for Sissy Spacek.
"My roots are deep in independent film -- I've worked in independent film since 1973, so making this film was like coming home," said Spacek, an Oscar nominee along with Wilkinson and Field. "I think Todd Field really embodies all that an independent filmmaker needs, and that is a tenacious character, a little bit like a bulldog. I want to say one all for all independent filmmakers to remember -- it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog."
Also taking major awards Saturday was the coming-of-age comedy "Ghost World," which grabbed the Indie trophy for best first screenplay (Daniel Clowes and Terry Zwigoff), and best supporting male actor (Steve Buscemi).
In a ceremony much more laid back than the Oscars, the ceremony takes place annually under a tent on the beach in Santa Monica, Calif.
