Shark Caught Day Before By Fisherman May Have Been Pregnant

PARADISE BEACH, Fla. -- A 7-foot hammerhead shark died Monday morning after beaching itself a day after being caught by a fisherman in Brevard County, according to an official. The female shark was discovered on Paradise Beach, which is just north of Melbourne, and measured 86 inches long, according to Thomas Samarco of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. "It was actually caught on the beach (Sunday) night. A fisherman tried to revive it and tried to get it back out (into the ocean). It beached itself earlier (Monday) morning," Samarco said. Officials took the shark from the beach to investigatate the cause of death. "Was it because of a hook and line that she beached herself? We'll do a necropsy to see how it happened," Samarco said. Samarco said the shark may have been pregnant. Beached sharks are rare in Brevard County, according to Samarco. "We don't get a lot of shark calls. This may have been the second one in about a year. This is the biggest one I've seen," Samarco said. Watch Local 6 News for more on this story.
