System May Be Worse Than Hurricane For Beaches

Low-Pressure Expected To Remain Cold-Core System

A rogue low-pressure system spinning in the Atlantic Ocean could cause more damage to Florida beaches than a hurricane, according to a beach official.

Forecasters said there is a slim chance that the low sitting off the coast would strengthen into a named subtropical storm.

"In order for it to be a tropical system, it needs to have warm air through the entire level of the atmosphere," Local 6 meteorologist Larry Mowry said. "That is not the cast with this system. It looks like a tropical system but again it is not technically a tropical system."

Because the system is expected to pound east coast beaches for days, experts said it could do serious damage to beaches.

"It can do more damage that a hurricane does," lifeguard official Scott Petersohn told Local 6 News Tuesday. "Typically, hurricanes hit for 24 hours and are gone but this is going to blow another 36 hours."

The National Weather Service said it is unlikely that the system will become a warm-core system. However, as the system moves south, it will move into warmer waters.

The best chance for rain for Central Florida will be on Wednesday.

"The low is not going to be moving very fast," Mowry said. "It is going to impacting our weather for the next couple of days."

Temperatures will be in the 50s in Central Florida early Tuesday.

Hurricane season does not officially start until June 1.
