Dodge Dashboards Being Fixed In Wake Of Local 6 Reports

POSTED: Friday, May 11, 2007

Several owners of Dodge Rams who claim their dashboards are collapsing or cracking are getting dealerships to make repairs to their vehicles in the wake of several reports on the apparent problems.

However, not all consumers with the apparent problems are getting the same treatment, according to Local 6's Steven Cooper.

Sunshine Dodge Ram in Melbourne, Fla., opened its doors to Local 6 cameras to show how the dealership is replacing Dodge Ram dashboards.

The report featured a Dodge Ram belonging to Paul Davis, who saw the Local 6 investigation into cracking and collapsing dashboards and realized he was not alone.

Davis called Daimler Chrysler.

"They said they were going to call the local dealership which was Sunshine Dodge here in Melbourne and tell them I was to bring the truck in so they could inspect it," Davis said.

After the inspection, Sunshine Dodge called Detroit and worked out plans to replace the dashboard -- for a $100 co-payment, refundable if and when a recall is issued.

"I kind of thought they should pay the whole thing but I figured with the age of my truck and that the whole thing would be $1,200, I guess that's a pretty good deal," Davis said.

Meredith McGee, who Local 6 interviewed last week, said she, too, has had her dashboard replaced since our story broke.

"Five minutes after I got off the phone with Dodge the 800 number, I got a call from Winter Park Dodge and they called and said they want to see my truck," McGee said.

Winter Park Dodge made the same arrangement for her that Sunshine Dodge made for Davis.

"If it wasn't for Local 6 and you, I don't think this would have happened at all, especially this fast," McGee said.

A parts and service director at Winter Park Dodge said Dodge knew there was a problem with cracking dashboards but that no one expected it to get this bad, Cooper reported.

"We want to take the opportunity to take care of the customer and show that customer satisfaction is definitely highly important to us," Winter Park Dodge George Uvalle said. "It you have a Dodge Ram between those years, bring the vehicle in we'll take a look at it, call Chrysler first, get your care number."

Other consumers said Daimler Chrysler is inconsistent in its problem solving.

"Some people are being charged $300 for the repair, while others said they're being turned away," Cooper said.

"It is up to the discretion of that particular dealership as to how they want to handle it," Uvalle said.

"What this means is that not all dealerships will take part in this repair program, and Daimler Chrysler may negotiate different prices for different customers based on customer loyalty," Cooper said. "That's not official -- merely the interpretation from some area dealers."

Cooper said the problem continues to grow.

Reports of dashboard problems are coming from drivers in Indiana, Virginia and Alabama.

McGhee thinks Daimler Chrysler needs to issue a safety recall because people are reporting losing their headlights and brake lights over the problem.

"It was proven by your e-mails all over the country," McGee said. "So, it is a problem that Dodge needs to deal with."

"There is growing debate over whether a recall will or should be issued, and even more debate over what's causing these problems," Cooper said. "While some people point to the heat and the sun, others point to the map and see the problem persists in states where the heat and sun are not an issue and to the fact that all dashes in Florida are not reacting this way to the heat."

Cooper said questions to Daimler Chrysler about the inconsistencies of the repair decisions have gone unanswered.

Daimler Chrysler sent Local 6 an e-mail reiterating that it is reviewing customer inquiries on a case-by-case basis, the report said.
