Surveillance video from a store parking lot in Detroit captured a man punching a 91-year-old in the head and face 21 times before stealing his car.
Police said Deontae Bradley, 22, was arrested and charged with assault and felony carjacking in connection with the attack on Leonard Sims at a Stop and Go Liquor store located at 3206 W. McNichols Road.
Sims said his attacker approached him last week and asked for a cigarette before the attack.
Video showed the World War II veteran being hit in the face repeatedly until falling to the ground, police said. The culprit was then seen driving away in Sims' 2005 Chevrolet Malibu.
A crowd of people were also videotaped standing nearby watching the beating and not doing anything to help, police said.
Bradley could face up to life in prison for the attack, according to the report.
Sims, who was injured in the attack, delivered a message for the attacker.
"(He should) turn his life around and go to school," Sims said. "Learn a trade, get a job and work for a living and don't steal."
