A 500-pound orangutan escaped from its cage at a Taiwan zoo in Kaohsiung Wednesday and chased tourists and police before it was shot with a tranquilizer gun.
Officials at the Shaoshan Zoo in southern Taiwan said the 10-year-old orangutan broke through its cage and barged into a park full of tourists.
The rampaging orangutan knocked down a motorbike and destroyed furniture in a park restaurant where a girl was trapped inside waiting for help.
Police arriving with weapons and shields were chased by the orangutan.
After a two-hour pursuit a veterinarian from Kaohsiung Agricultural bureau arrived and fired a tranquilizer to knock down the escaped orangutan.
One woman was chased by the orangutan through the park, the report said.
"It was so close, my friend pulled me away from the orangutan immediately when it approached me," the woman said.
There were no reported injuries from the incident but the owner could face fines over the mistake.
