Police: Snake-Stealer Bitten, Hospitalized

Man Accused Of Stealing 5 Snakes From Shed

POSTED: Monday, June 18, 2007
UPDATED: 4:56 pm EDT June 18, 2007

A Central Florida man accused of stealing poisonous snakes from a shed was hospitalized after he was bitten several times, according to authorities.

Jonathan Lafever, 20, entered a Bushnell Wal-Mart at about 4 a.m. after suffering the snakebites on his hand, according to Sumter County sheriff's investigators. Employees found him bleeding and called authorities, according to a sheriff's report.

Officials said they discovered five snakes in a box in the trunk of Lafever's car.

The owner of the snakes was contacted and identified all of the stolen snakes, including two Rock rattlesnakes, a Honduran Milk snake, a butter rat snake and a southern hognose snake, according to authorities.

Lafever admitted to stealing the snakes from a shed that had a "Poisonous Snakes" sign posted on it, according to a sheriff's report.

He was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center because Leesburg Regional Hospital did not have antivenin. Lafever was listed in stable condition, officials said.

Lafever has not yet been arrested because he was hospitalized, officials said.
