Dubai-Based Company Wants To Build 'Hollywood East' In Florida

Complex Would Rival Hollywood Studios

Representatives from a Dubai-based corporation met with Florida Gov. Charlie Crist and other state officials about apparent plans to build a media complex that they said would rival film studios in Hollywood, Local 6 News has learned.

Sketches of the film complex show "Hollywood East" would have sound stages, back lots and even a space for film students at the Florida location.

The Dubai businessmen from Capital Plus were in St. Petersburg, Fla., this week to discuss the effort but the governor would not say much else about the meeting.

"These individuals have a great interest in Florida," Crist said. "They are from Dubai. Beyond that, I don't know that I'm at liberty to say much more."

State Rep. Kevin Ambler of Hillsborough County also met with the visiting representatives and said, "Florida is trying to be the next great Hollywood of the country" and the potential partnership could make it happen.

"The projects that we're talking about could be creating upwards of 8,000 jobs and infusing billions of dollars into our economy," Ambler said.

The company is also looking into creating a global real estate investment institute in Florida that would trade properties and shares worldwide.

Capital Plus is scouting for 800 acres of real estate and plans to make a decision in the next three months.

The cities apparently being considered for the future film studio are Orlando, Miami and Tampa/St. Petersburg, the Local 6 report said.
