Drum-Banging Protesters Arrested During Homeless Ordinance Protest

POSTED: Wednesday, June 27, 2007
UPDATED: 9:26 am EDT June 28, 2007

Several protesters banging drums and wielding kitchen utensils were arrested Wednesday as they expressed their opposition to a city ordinance banning the feeding of homeless in parks.

The group called Orlando Food Not Bombs protested outside the Graze restaurant in downtown Orlando -- a location where Mayor Buddy Dyer was scheduled to have a fundraiser Wednesday.

While outside the business, some of the protestors started drumming and chanting, "No justice, no peace, when people cannot eat."

When the drumming became louder after officers asked them to quiet down, six people were arrested.

"I actually did not expect people to be arrested for violating a so-called noise ordinance in the middle of the afternoon," American Civil Liberties Union representative George Crossley said.

"Had they not had the drums, they could protest all day if they wanted to," Orlando police Deputy Chief Gene Bernal said.

Several protesters said they were not going to stop their fight.

"This will not deter us from using our First Amendment rights nor will it deter us from sharing food with people," Orlando Food Not Bombs representative Ben Markeson said.

The ACLU said they were disgusted by the arrests and said they plan to help the people arrested fight the noise violation charges.
