DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Daytona Beach police are searching for a man who they said raped a deaf, mute woman at gunpoint inside a stolen vehicle on Sunday.

According to Daytona Beach police, the woman was walking to a store at about 7:30 a.m. when she was convinced to get inside a stolen silver Dodge Neon. The woman was then sexually assaulted at gunpoint behind a house located at 933 Lewis Drive in Daytona Beach, police said.

The house where the alleged attack took place is vacant, according to police.

The alleged victim ran from the car after the attack and informed a bystander of the incident by writing, "I've been raped" on a piece of paper, officials said. The bystander then called police.

The assailant is described as a black man between the ages of 18 and 25, about 5 feet 8 inches tall with short hair and some facial hair. He was wearing a white T-shirt, blue jean shorts, a light blue hat and white Nike shoes.

"If you have a shred of decency in you and you saw that -- this is something that has got to shock your conscience -- you cannot allow some scumbag, some predator to wander the street because next time it might be your daughter or it might be your mother," Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood said. "So if you know who it is, it behooves you to call us to get this kind of scum of the street and behind bars where they belong."

Police said the woman is being treated at the Rape Crisis Center in Daytona Beach.
