Police: Worker Stole $600K From Church

Alleged Theft Happened Over Several Years, Officials Say

POSTED: Monday, July 23, 2007
UPDATED: 1:28 pm EDT July 23, 2007

An unnamed former employee of St. Mary Magdalen Church in Altamonte Springs has been accused of embezzling at least $600,000, according to an Orlando Sentinel report.

The alleged theft happened over several years, with money taken from church fundraisers and congregation donations, officials told Local 6 News.

Officials said the former worker has admitted to stealing some of the funds but contested taking the full amount.

Parishioners were informed of the theft during weekend Masses.

"(I am) shocked that somebody could do something like that to such a parish that is so full of ministries, that does such good for the parish and the community," parishioner Irene Kuhn said.

An official with the Orlando Diocese said they will file for restitution from the former employee and have already filed an insurance claim.

No arrests have been made in the case.
