ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- An Orange County school ground littered with World War II-era bombs and other dangerous munitions has caught the attention of Florida Sens. Mel Martinez and Bill Nelson.
Martinez and Nelson toured the grounds of Odessey Middle School just northeast of Lake Nona with the Army Corps of Engineers on Monday and said they plan to develop a plan to clean up the grounds.
Recently, more than 1,000 buried pieces of small firing arms, high-explosive bombs and air-to-ground rockets were found scattered and buried just feet from the school.
"The fact is a half a century ago people did not pay attention to the things that we pay attention to today. And Florida wasn't nearly as developed 50 years ago, so we're just having to take it as it comes" Nelson said.
In a letter to the Pentagon last week, the senators said their goal was to lay out the plan before students head back to class.
Charlie Fales of the Army Corps of Engineers said even after all of the years, the munitions are still dangerous.
The cleanup process is expected to cost up to $20 million.
The senators have helped secure more than $1 million to get the process started.
They hope to have a least fencing in place to separate the school and the bomb site before the 1,500 students return to meet their teachers Aug. 13.
