Police: Man With Bombs Threatened Reunion Would 'Make Va. Tech Look Like Party'

POSTED: Thursday, October 4, 2007
UPDATED: 9:20 am EDT October 4, 2007

A 39-year-old man in Lakeland was arrested early Thursday after police said he threatened "to make Virginia Tech look like a birthday party" at his high school reunion and hundreds of homemade explosives were found at his home.

Investigators said Timothy Joseph Vaughn was taken into custody at his home at 1045 Hallam Drive in Lakeland early Thursday.

Agents said the Web site Classmates.com originally sent Vaughn an e-mail invitation about an upcoming reunion for Lakeland High School's class of 1985.

Vaughn responded to the e-mail with threatening statements, referring to the April 2007 shooting at Virginia Tech where 33 people were killed, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

When officers traveled to his home they found a live M-80 explosive and then hundreds of homemade destructive devices and about 700 additional explosive devices under construction.

The sheriff's office said Vaughn admitted to sending the e-mail and said he, "Hated all of his classmates and just wanted to be left alone."

Vaughn was booked into the Polk County Jail on aggravated cyber-stalking charges and nearly 200 counts of possessing a destructive device.

The investigation is ongoing.
