POINCIANA, Fla. -- Firefighters in Polk County discovered a charred body on Thursday after extinguishing a small brush fire, and officials are investigating the death as a homicide.
The Polk County Fire Department responded to the fire off Marlin Road, which runs off Mediterranean in a new subdivision without homes off Lake Marion Creek Road, after receiving a call from a resident at about 9 a.m.
After putting the brush fire out, firefighters found the body and called the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
A preliminary investigation showed that the body was an unidentified female whose age and race cannot be determined, officials said.
An autopsy will be performed to determine how the victim died.
