ORLANDO, Fla. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is expanding a search under a group of homes in an Orlando subdivision after a 23-pound World War II-era explosive device was found buried in a back yard.
Officials said the device was located about 2 feet underground at a house under construction in the 8600 block of the Warwick subdivision in Orlando.
Crews initially began searching for munitions in the Warwick neighborhood, located near Odyssey Middle School, after two rockets and a grenade were found buried underground in October about 1,000 feet behind the school and yards from homes.
The Warwick subdivision, which is located near land formerly used by the U.S. Army as a bombing range, was thought to be outside the area experts thought explosives would be buried.
The discovery of the device has caused concern among residents living in Warwick.
"I just feel there could be more, (bombs) back there that they didn't find," homeowner Christina Liggett said.
"We have five children and we lost a child already," resident Louis Liggett said. "So, the last thing I want to do is put my children in harms way again."
A consulting firm hired by builder Lennar Homes marked properties where metal objects exist.
Lennar home builders told the homeowners that a munitions consultant they recently hired identified metal objects on all 54 of their home sites.
"Somebody has get involved and step up and say, "We knew something was wrong and we are going to fix it and here is how we are going to make it right,'" homeowner Eric McCandless.
A demolition squad from Patrick Air Force base was called to Orlando and safely destroyed the bomb.
A day care facility, a restaurant and a tanning spa were evacuated after the discovery.
