UPDATED: 2:38 am EST November 9, 2007

A Brevard County home overrun by cats that a deputy said were "too many to count" was discovered on Thursday after authorities received a call about a girl living in a house that reeked of urine and feces.

A Brevard County sheriff's deputy, an animal control officer and a representative with the Department of Children and Family Services removed 36 cats, including 12 kittens, from the home on Ash Court in Sharpes.

The animals will be taken to the North Animal Care Facility in Titusville, where they will be evaluated.

Brevard County Sheriff's Deputy Jorge Morell said they went to the home after the DCF received a report that a woman, identified as Mary Gregory, 56, and her daughter were living in the home, which reeked of cat urine and feces.

"I've never smelled anything like that in my life," Morell told Local 6 News partner Florida Today. "You have no idea."

Morell said when he entered the home there were too many cats to count.

DCF officials said the woman has been given a week to get the house cleaned.
