Thousands Of Bees Stacked On Roof Of Home Prompt Neighborhood Battle
Homeowner: 'We Are Concerned For Our Safety'
The piles of bees are perched on top of Trent Milliken's home located at 127 DeLeon Road in Cocoa Beach.Homeowner Nancy Aumuller said children have been swarmed by the bees on more than one occasion."We are concerned for our safety -- for the safety of our children and for our property value," neighbor Nancy Aumuller said. "Who would want to live next to someone who has bee hives?"Milliken, who was recently warned about the bees, won a city ruling Wednesday allowing him to keep the hives.Cocoa Beach doesn't have an ordinance governing beekeeping, the board found. And Milliken has been a registered beekeeper in Florida since 1990.Milliken was cited in 1990 by the city of Cape Canaveral for having bees there. In 2004, Cape Canaveral won an injunction that prevents Milliken from keeping bees in the city for the rest of Milliken's life."It's something he's authorized to do under the agricultural department," said Cocoa Beach development services director, Anthony Caravella. "He's managing something that occurs in nature."Milliken's attorney Gary Frese was pleased with the outcome."I think that was a good resolution for an old beekeeper," Frese said.Neighbors vow to continue fighting to get the bees removed.Watch Local 6 News for more on this story.
