An Orange County gas station was closed Tuesday after motorists unknowingly pumped a strange liquid, possibly sewer water, into their vehicles, causing them to break down on nearby roads.
Several motorists said their vehicles shook violently and died after filling up with gasoline at a Citgo located on East Colonial Drive at Old Cheney Highway.
Mechanic Tony Sarmiento immediately noticed a problem in motorist Santos Rodriguez's vehicle.
"You can see it's mixed with sewer water or something," mechanic Tony Sarmiento said. "It is brown fluid, some type of sewer water."
"You couldn't stand (the smell)?"
"Correct," Sarmiento said. "It smelled like a toilet."
Other motorists have reported similar problems after filling up at the same Citgo gas station.
"(The mechanic) said you have a tank of water with black gunk in it," resident Deanna Stonier said.
The Florida Department of Agriculture confirmed Tuesday that there was something in the gas, finding "water and or suspended matter" at the gas station's premium pumps, Local 6 has learned.
"The premium gasoline at Big Sammy Food Mart, 6300 East Colonial Drive, Orlando was placed under stop sales as it was found to contain water and or suspended matter," a FDA statement said.
Officials bagged the nozzles and shut down the station after the discovery.
The gas station manager said it was not his fault and that tank lids are open so anyone could have poured anything in, Local 6's Erik von Ancken reported. He said Citgo could have also pumped contaminated gas.
Citgo technicians are traveling to the station to clean the tank. The state then must give the OK before the pumps can be turned back on.
Motorists who believe they were sold bad gas were urged to contact their insurance companies.
