ORLANDO, Fla. -- Two Orlando police officers were forced to deliver a baby at the corner of a downtown street early Wednesday when the woman's husband became lost while traveling to the hospital.
Officers said in the rush to drive to Winnie Palmer Hospital, an expecting father made a wrong turn and ended up on South Street and Boone.
When the man noticed that his wife was giving birth, he flagged down a police officer.
"We were trying to give him directions but Mother Nature took her course and basically we didn't have time," Police officer Richard Patterson said.
"When we got out (of the patrol car), we actually saw the head of the baby coming out," Orlando officer Nahoun Daniel told Local 6's Tiffany Tift. "It is probably the most gratifying thing I've done at the police department. Words cannot describe it."
Both officers said they were thrilled to take part in the birth.
"It is the first time in my 8-year career that I was able to take part in a live childbirth," Daniel said.
The newborn boy is healthy and at the hospital early Wednesday.
