A woman and her husband were arrested on Tuesday after nearly 20 flea-infested Great Danes were seized and officials said they found the living room of their Central Florida home covered in 10 inches of feces.

Patricia Ann Rust, 62, of Lakeland, was charged with 11 counts of animal cruelty and her husband, Mason William Rust, 70, of Lakeland, was charged with 10 counts of animal cruelty.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office said an investigation began in November when Animal Control was contacted by an individual from the Great Dane Rescue of Tampa Bay, advising that she had taken custody of a dog that was severely malnourished and had difficulty walking.

A sheriff's deputy who failed to make contact with the Rusts on multiple occasions found both the couple of Tuesday at 10914 Country View Drive in Lakeland.

While at the home, and after charging Patricia Rust in the November incident, the deputy learned that 10 Great Danes were locked inside the mobile home, which was in deplorable conditions, authorities said.

The floor of the home was covered in urine and feces, and the ammonia odor made breathing difficult, the deputy said. Feces were piled as high as 10 inches in the living room.

The 10 dogs inside were seized, and two other Great Danes found at a second residence in Lakeland were also seized.

A total of 19 dogs were taken to Animal Control. All of the dogs were flea-infested and were being evaluated and treated at Animal Control.
