ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- Two right whales, presumably a mother and its calf, were spotted on Friday about 300 yards offshore in Volusia County in a rare sighting.
The whales were spotted at about 11:30 a.m. in the waters near state Road A1A and Boylston Avenue between Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach.
Right whales are the most endangered of all whale species, and there are only about 300 right whales in the north Atlantic Ocean, Local 6 News reported.
A beach patrol official said the mother whale was as large as a bus. Right whales can grow up to 50 feet long and can weigh 120,000 pounds, Local 6 News reporter Tarik Minor said.
The whales appeared to be OK, but biologists from SeaWorld have been contacted in case the whales become distressed.
The right whales, which are extremely slow swimmers, were headed north.
