LONGWOOD, Fla. -- A man was arrested on suspicion of throwing a brick through his own bedroom window, intentionally setting a fire, which caused his infant daughter to suffer second-degree burns, and claiming that a friend of his estranged wife was responsible for the attack, according to Longwood police.
Terry Stewart, of Longwood, faces multiple charges, including aggravated battery on a child, domestic violence and arson. The incident occurred at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday on Hamilton Avenue.
According to Longwood police, Stewart called authorities and reported that an unknown person threw a brick into the bedroom where he and his daughter were sleeping. Stewart claimed that a fire then ignited in the room, burning his daughter on her legs and feet, police said.
The girl was was transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital and was later released.
Stewart originally claimed that a possible associate of his estranged wife had committed the crime, but an investigation determined that Stewart was responsible for the incident, Longwood police said.
Police said Stewart threw the brick through the window, then went back inside the house and poured some type of accelerant onto a blanket, which erupted into flames much faster than he expected, and unintentionally burned his daughter.
Stewart was arrested and taken to the Seminole County Jail.
