FHP: Driver Involved In 2nd Fatal Crash

16-Year-Old Struck, Killed While Riding Bike

POSTED: Wednesday, January 2, 2008
UPDATED: 5:30 pm EST January 2, 2008

The driver of a car who was allegedly street racing when he struck and killed a 16-year-old in Orange County on Tuesday night was involved in a similar fatal crash four years ago, according to Florida Highway Patrol reports.

According to troopers, Robert Roedell, 22, of Orlando, was going at least 70 mph -- more than twice the speed limit of 35 mph -- along Forsyth Road in east Orange County on Tuesday when he struck Luis Ortega, 16, who was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk.

Witnesses told authorities that Roedell was involved in a street race when he swerved to avoid hitting another car and crashed into Ortega.

"The kids were on the sidewalk. They were going to play basketball. I think the law should be a little more stern about this kind of crap," a family member of the victim said.

Local 6 News obtained a traffic homicide investigation report from December 2003 that states Roedell was racing a car that crashed into a steamroller, killing a man.

Roedell has been issued two tickets for unsafe equipment in the past, and FHP troopers said his car is equipped with illegal tires.

"We can't have this tire on the road. It's an equipment violation. If you get caught with these tires, you're issued a ticket," FHP Trooper Kim Miller said. "You can't brake, you can't steer, you can't keep control if your vehicle goes out of control."

Roedell has not been arrested, but an investigation into the crash has not been completed. He was not charged in the 2003 crash.
