MINNEOLA, Fla. -- Children playing in a dirt pile near an historic Minneola cemetery on Wednesday discovered human remains.
A crew digging a new burial site accidentally unearthed the remains and children found some bones in a dirt pile near the cemetery, which dates back to the 1880s and where some of the town's earliest settlers and mayors are buried.
The medical examiner is trying to identify the remains so they can be properly buried again.
"It's our responsibility as council and the city to maintain (the cemetery). We never had any money in the budget before to maintain it -- we cut the grass here and that's about it -- but I think we need to step it up a little," Minneola Mayor David Yeager said.
Yeager said he hopes to get a restoration project passed that would include a divide between the cemetery and homes that are located within feet of it.
The project would also restore headstones that have deteriorated over time.
