Police: Dad Fired Shots In Front Of Kids

Man Claimed He Was Shot In Home Invasion, Police Say

POSTED: Monday, January 7, 2008
UPDATED: 1:00 pm EST January 7,2008

A Mims man shot a handgun several times Monday morning in front of his children, broke out a window and told neighbors two men had invaded his house and shot him in the back, Brevard County sheriff's deputies said.

But when deputies arrived at the home, they said they found no home invaders and no gunshot wounds, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.

The man, Wilfredo Garcia, 45, was taken to Parrish Medical Center in Titusville for treatment of apparently self-inflicted cuts, deputies said.

His three children, all boys between the ages of 4 and 8, were placed into the custody of the Florida Department of Children & Families.

"There was no home invasion here. It appears he did fire off several rounds in his house, but whether it was from his psychological state that he's going through (or) made this up, the three children are fine," Brevard County sheriff's Lt. Michael Demorat said.

A neighbor called 911 after 8 a.m. to report a "hostage situation" at 4709 Estrada Lane, a street in the Cambridge Park neighborhood west of Interstate 95 and north of state Road 46, dispatchers said.

Witnesses said they heard shots from inside the house and deputies feared a hostage situation or a possible home invasion.

Garcia went next door and told the neighbors he shot at two robbers inside his house and they fired back, shooting him in the back, deputies said.

Deputies said they believe Garcia cut his hand knocking out a glass window and fired several rounds from a handgun, but that he wasn't aiming at anyone.
