OCALA, Fla. -- In the "Blade" movies, Wesley Snipes had us believe he was a half-man, half-vampire. But can he get a Florida court to believe he was duped into believing that he didn't have to pay federal taxes?
That's the argument the actor is making in a tax evasion case that opens today in Ocala. The actor claims he was a victim of unscrupulous advice and didn't know he was doing anything illegal when he demanded millions of dollars in refunds on taxes he had already paid -- or when he stopped filing returns altogether for several years.
Prosecutors said Snipes bought into a bogus argument by tax protesters that he didn't have to pay taxes on money earned in this country.
That argument has been rejected by both the IRS and by courts over the years.
If convicted, Snipes could get up to 15 years in federal prison.
