A crossing guard is in critical condition on Thursday after being struck by a taxi van near the Orange County Convention Center, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

David Richards, 26, was struck by the taxi, driven by a 72-year-old, after stepping into the road to stop traffic, FHP troopers said.

"It almost looked like the van had hit the gas instead of the brake, and then I looked over and (saw) the man the van hit come out from underneath the van," witness Jim Annesley said.

Richards was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Troopers said the crash appeared to be unintentional.

It is not known if the taxi driver will face charges.

The crash is under investigation.
