WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- A woman who stopped her vehicle alongside a Central Florida road to help a stray dog was carjacked on Sunday night, according to authorities.
A woman stopped her white 2005 BMW x5 on Country Club Road, near the Summerfield subdivision in Winter Haven, at about 7:30 p.m. to help the dog when she was approached by two men, Polk County sheriff's deputies said.
The men, one of whom was armed with a silver handgun, forced the woman from her vehicle, jumped in it and drove off, deputies said. The carjackers drove southbound on Country Club Road toward Dundee Road, deputies said.
Patrol deputies responded to the area and located the vehicle abandoned and half-submerged in Lake Smart, just off 11th Street and Avenue T in Winter Haven.
One of the assailants was described as a white man about 5 feet 9 inches tall with short brown hair. He was wearing a white or gray sweatshirt and dark-colored pants and had a silver semiautomatic handgun. The other culprit was described as a white man about 5 feet 7 inches tall with a thin build. He was wearing a dark, plaid flannel shirt and blue or gray pants.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 800-226-TIPS.
