Surfers Approach Whales, Police Respond

People Must Stay At Least 500 Yards Away From Endangered Right Whales

Surfers paddling near a North Atlantic right whale and her calf on Tuesday drew Cocoa Beach police to the scene.

The surfers approached the whales just off 10th Street, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.

Under the Endangered Species Act, people must stay at least 500 yards from the whales. Getting closer can subject violators to civil penalties up to $27,500 and criminal fines up to $50,000 or a year in jail.

Wildlife officials said that if a whale approaches you, you should move slowly away.

The whales are thought to be the same pair spotted off Satellite Beach on Monday.

Only about 300 to 400 of the whales remain, making them among the most endangered marine mammals in the world.
