ORLANDO, Fla. -- Name-brand supermarket items were compared to similar generic products during a taste test in an ongoing Local 6 series called "Supermarket Wars."
Local 6 took Central Floridian Darlene Khouzam shopping at Publix to purchase a list of name-brand items and their generic counterparts.
Khouzam saved $20 on the seven food items and seven other items.
The items were then presented to the woman's four children.
We asked them to compare in a blind taste test the generics to the brand names, Local 6's Steven Cooper reported.
Three out of four children preferred the brand-name cheese over the generic.
Two said the generic pretzels tasted better and two said there was no difference.
Only one preferred the Diet Pepsi and three of them said there was no difference.
Three out of the four children said there was no difference in the cereal and one even preferred the generic Fruit Loops.
Two preferred the Oreo cookies and two said there was no difference.
All four agreed that the generic peanut butter was no different that JIF.
And all four agreed that the generic orange juice was no different than the Tropicana Pure Premium.
So, out of 28 tests, the children liked six of the generics, five of the brand names and found no difference in 17 other tests.
"Would this change your shopping habits?" Cooper said.
"Yes, yes it would absolutely," Khouzam said. "It's encouraging to me that there is really no big taste difference. So, absolutely you should buy store brands and save yourself a ton of money."
Cooper will play the "Grocery Game" with a local shopper who promises to save customers thousands of dollars each year.
