7 Schools May Be Forced To Close

POSTED: Thursday, February 14, 2008

A budget crunch and a lack of students may force seven schools in Volusia County to close their doors.

Local 6 has learned the school superintendent wants to close down four schools this summer. The schools are Boston Avenue in DeLand, Bonner Elementary in Daytona Beach, Seville Elementary and Samsula Elementary.

The other three schools would close one per year.

In all, 600 students would move, saving $4.5 million per year.

The School Board votes on the plan on Feb. 26.

Volusia County has already cut more than 300 jobs and $20 million from its budget due to Florida's slowing economy.

More cuts are expected in March.
