Swarms of fleas from an abandoned Central Florida home are spreading throughout a neighborhood, covering some homeowners' head to toe when they step outside.

"I walked through, into the back yard and walked back into my house and I was covered from head to toe with fleas," neighbor Leslie Larson said. "The fleas come from the lawn, rats and dogs they didn't take care of."

The fleas are feeding on fallen fruit near the abandoned home in Deltona and so are groups of rats from the home, neighbors said.

"(My husband) went to start up the lawnmower and rats took off from underneath my lawnmower and they went to the yard," Larson said.

Code enforcement officers said the homeowner is not violating any laws by having excessive fleas and rats in their back yard.

"We did what we could," city of Deltona employee Lee Lopez said. "We went out to the house and didn't see any violations and because there wasn’t really anything we needed to notify the owner about, we haven't done any type of search to find out who the homeowner is."

"They say Leslie Larson will have to fight them on her own," Local 6's Tarik Minor said.

"I think the city should fine these people for abandoning their house and make them come back and take care of their house," Larson said. "It is an abandoned house."

The city of Deltona said neighbors should take steps to protect their yards and there are no obvious health concerns concerning the home.
