BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- A Navy ordnance disposal team has recovered a live, rust-encrusted hand grenade found near the St. Simons Island Lighthouse early Monday morning.
The military explosive was found by a Brunswick woman, who took it to her job to show co-workers.
Brunswick police that after securing the grenade in a metal box, the team from Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base took it from an Auto Zone parking lot to be detonated at a safe disposal site.
Police had closed the auto parts store plus an adjacent business for about 90 minutes after Asia Portis, 19, reported that she'd found the grenade and had it inside her car. Portis told police she found the grenade near a gazebo about 50 yards from the lighthouse around 1 a.m. Monday.
As a precaution, Glynn County police searched the lighthouse grounds and neighboring Neptune Park, which will be the site of the 4-day Golden Isles Sunshine Festival beginning Wednesday night.
Glynn police Lt. Ted McDonald said nothing else was found.
