65-Year-Old Woman Awakes With Masked Man On Top Of Her

POSTED: Tuesday, February 26, 2008
UPDATED: 8:41 am EST February 27, 2008

A 65-year-old Leesburg woman fought off a masked man overnight Monday after awakening to find him on top of her, police said.

The woman told Local 6 News that she was asleep in her mobile home retirement community when she mistakenly thought her dog had climbed into bed with her.

"That's when I opened my eyes and there was this face 4 to 5 inches away from me. And he had me straddled. He was on all fours," said the woman, who was not identified.

The man had unbuttoned the woman's shirt when she began to fight.

"I was beyond angry. How dare he do this? So I fought," she said. "It scared me, but then I just started swinging out at him. We got into a brawl, so to speak, pushing and holding down and kicking up," she said.

The woman said the struggle continued until she was pushed off the bed; striking her head on a nightstand.

"I just laid there for a few seconds. I had the wind knocked out of me, and he just nonchalantly walked out the front door," she said.

The woman said she thinks the intruder entered her home through an open window.

"Of course, as usual, keep your windows locked, and any suspicious activity, report to the police department," Leesburg police Lt. Rob Hicks said.

"Oh, I'm a fighter, I don't know what else to say. If someone is coming into my space and doing something to me I don't want them to do, I want them to at least pay for it," the woman said.

The woman said she did not get a good look at the man but described him as about 5 feet 9 inches tall and 180 pounds. She said the man is likely in his 40s, based on the sound of his voice.
