POSTED: Wednesday, February 27, 2008
UPDATED: 9:54 am EST February 28, 2008

A St. Cloud police officer was arrested after authorities said he broke into a model home and stole furnishings while on duty.

Richard Berndt Jr. was fired immediately and stripped of his badge after St. Cloud police said he broke into the home and took a small table and other furnishings.

Officers said Berndt broke into a model home in the Turtle Creek subdivision located off Narcoosee Road.

Berndt, who was a probationary officer with the department, told police he took the items because he thought the property was abandoned.

Capt. Bret Dunn said Berndt was charged with burglary and was being held on $2,500 bail at the Osceola County Jail.

It was not known if Berndt had a lawyer.
