POSTED: Friday, February 29, 2008
UPDATED: 9:57 am EST March 1, 2008

A 25-foot, 4,000-pound Fin Whale that washed ashore on a Central Florida beach has died, officials said.

The whale was spotted on Friday afternoon north of Beverly Beach in Flagler County.

Members from the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute responded to the whale, which was badly decomposed.

Earlier on Friday, Local 6 News helicopter Sky 6 showed several onlookers near the whale, which was being pushed ashore by waves.

A necropsy will be performed on the whale and its carcass will be buried, officials said.

Members of the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute respond to an average of one dead or sick whale or dolphin every week.
