Police: Woman Borrows Gun, Kills Husband

POSTED: Monday, March 3, 2008
UPDATED: 8:01 am EST March 4, 2008

A woman is accused of borrowing a gun from a neighbor and then shooting and killing her husband Monday in their home south of Macclenny, according to the Baker County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said Meloney Jackson borrowed a gun from a neighbor, entered the house in the 7000 block of John Rowe Street and shot Kevin Jackson.

Baker County deputies responded to the scene at about 5 a.m. after neighbors reported hearing five gunshots coming from the house, WJXT reported. They found the husband dead of gunshot wounds in the front yard with a gun laying next to his body and took the wife into custody.

One of the couple's two teenage children was home at the time but was not hurt.

"He was on his way to work. He was to be to work at 6 a.m. As you see, we got the call at 5:12 a.m.," said Sheriff Joey Dobson.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement joined Baker County detectives gathering evidence at the home.

"Numerous shots were fired. The medical examiner and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement crime scene and our crime scene people are at the residence," Dobson said. "We have been to this residence on numerous occasions."

He said Jackson has not admitted to the shooting and that investigators do not yet have a motive.

However, a gun dealer said Jackson was pleading a self-defense case to him last week when she tried urgently to buy a gun from his shop.

Bill Krall, owner of Hole In The Wall Antiques Guns and Ammo, said Jackson came into his store last Thursday to buy a gun.

"She was telling me how her husband had threatened her and they were going to court on Tuesday, and she needed a gun right now," Krall said.

He said he knew something was not right and went directly to the sheriff's office when the woman left his store.

WJXT's John Dunlap was told that the Jacksons were in the process of getting a divorce. It was to be finalized at a hearing set for Tuesday.
